ANNUAL PLANT SALE HUGE SUCCESS

The Plant sale on 5/17/2008 was the biggest yet!!

A Few Pics!!

South Portland Land Trust made more money than ever. Thanks goes to Helen Slocum, board member who organized the event with the help of a number of volunteers who put their love of plants and strong backs into setting up the hundreds of flowers, vegetables and  greenery that filled the VFW on Broadway South Portland. Many more thanks go to the generous donations from local businesses including: Skillins, Risbana, O'Donals, Estabrook, Broadway Gardens, Shaw's and Hannaford's grocery stores. A special thanks goes to the members who supported the land trust by purchasing plants and to those who signed up as new members and a big THANKS to the general public that helped put us over the top!!

The Conservation Commission is looking for new members!

We have two open seats;

One in District One and another in District Three.

Additional Associate Seats Also Available

We also have 7 Associate Member positions open;

one for each district and two at large.

This is a great way to learn about the Commission and become involved!

How do I apply?

Each member needs to be appointed by her/his City Council Representative.  You need to start by going on-line to fill out the application there.  (www.southportland.org then click on “Boards and Committees” in blue at the top is an “On-Line Application”) or stop by City Hall and fill one out in person.  Once this is submitted your Councilor will be in touch.

What do I do?

The Conservation Commission serves as a research, advisory, advocacy group on environmental and conservation issues relating to the city.  We aim to preserve remaining open space through purchase and maintenance.  We aim to work with neighborhood associations in identifying desirable green space for those neighborhoods.  We aim to educate the community and property owners about wetlands, rivers, streams, etc.

What is required of me?

Come to two meetings a month (usually Thursday from 7-8:30pm), review development plans (don’t worry we have an interpreter J), maybe sit on other committees – one of our members is on the Ordinance Revision Committee which will go a long way in protecting wetlands, watersheds, clean up storm water run off etc.  Another member sits on the Long Creek Convening Committee and will help bring all the property owners around Clarks Pond/Long Creek together to clean it up and make it a place for the community to swim, fish and play once again.  It is a whole lot of fun, not a lot of work and you get to work on projects that will benefit your community, your family and your heirs for years to come!

How long do I serve?

You serve a three year term as either a Member

or Associate Member.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Shay Bellas at sbellas@maine.rr.com or 767-5445 with any questions!

SPLT & WET receives National Park Service Grant

The National Park Service today announced that the West End Trails (WET) project in South Portland has been selected to receive technical assistance for a year to help move the project forward. This includes assistance with strategic planning, technical help, and identifying potential funders.

“We are incredibly pleased to select the West End Trails project  as one of our key projects for the coming year,” said Julie Isbill of the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program. “The West End Trails project will knit together important natural resources and allow families in the South Portland area to enjoy the beauty of nature and have fun while getting fit.”

SPLT President Tom Blake stated that "piggy backed with our recent $200,000 funding for sidewalks and the recent creation of the Clarks Pond Trail gives the SPLT and the WET effort incredible viability and early successes.  With the NPS on Board, the potential is phenomenal for the Western portion of South Portland."

Through the Rivers & Trails program, the National Park Service helps communities and neighborhoods preserve their important local resources, protect river resources, develop new trails and greenways and create new open space.  These projects are locally-led with RTCA staff supporting local recreation and conservation leaders. This year, 64 projects were selected as RTCA grant recipients in the Northeast Region, spanning 13 states across New England and the Mid-Atlantic. In 2005, RTCA in the Northeast helped build nearly 220 new miles of bike and walking trails, created or restored more than 400 miles of river trails, and leveraged nearly $100 million in funds for targeted projects.
